“Panayot Volov” primary schools in the city of Shumen and the village of Madara in the area are becoming nearly zero-energy buildings with the support of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism under the Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Energy Security Programme, the Program Operator of which is the Ministry of Energy.

For the implementation of the project, the municipality of Shumen, as a Beneficiary, received a grant of approximately BGN 2,232,400, which is the full cost of the project. It was implemented in partnership with the Norwegian company MPENERGY AS. The funds have been used to insulate the exterior walls, roofs and floors of buildings, to replace the log and heating system by installing RES on the roof for own use. As a result of the carried out energy saving measures, the two schools are expected to save nearly 486 kWh of electricity per year, with a financial equivalent of about BGN 113 kWh per year.

The two schools, in Shumen and in Madara, play a key role in the social and educational life of the region and their transformation into nearly zero-energy buildings will make a major contribution to achieving a sustainable and decarbonised building stock. The implementation of the project shall ensure that the potential of renewable energy is fully exploited in order to maximise the energy efficiency of buildings.

The European Economic Area Financial Mechanism includes the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to a greener, more competitive and more inclusive Europe. The support provided under this assistance helps to reduce social and economic inequalities and strengthen bilateral relations between donors and Central and Eastern European countries
