Twenty-two municipalities were classified in the rehabilitation and modernization procedure of street lighting financed under the Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Energy Security Programme of the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area 2014-2020. In the order of their ranking, these are the municipalities of Sofia, Burgas, Malko Tarnovo, Varna, Targovishte, Pomorie, Lovech, Plovdiv, Vratza, Kotel, Sredetz, Velingrad, Sandanski, Tryavna, Haskovo, Apriltzi, Veliko Tarnovo, Smolyan, Knezha, Pazardzik, Shabla and Ruse.

The main objective of the procedure is to increase energy efficiency, reduce the costs of municipalities for lighting and improve the living conditions of the population.

The procedure “Rehabilitation and modernization of municipal infrastructure – systems for external artificial lighting of municipalities” has created a huge interest among local authorities. 107 municipalities had applied for funding under the program, where 104 of them passed the first stage of ranking – the administrative evaluation. The ranked municipalities receive between 200 thousand and 600 thousand EUR per project under the procedure amounting at EUR 8.97 million. The total value of the projects is nearly EUR 9.34 million, including national co-financing.

By a decision of the PO of 06.01.2021 the first twenty projects are classified, and by decision of 09.08.2021, 2 other projects have been approved from the reserve list.
