Ministry of Justice signed three contracts with the General Directorate for Execution of Penalties under the NFM

Three grant contracts for the implementation of predefined projects with beneficiary the Directorate General for Execution of Penalties /DGEP/ were signed today at the Ministry of Justice. Funds are granted under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 (NFM 2014-2021), Program “Justice”, as the Ministry of Justice has been appointed as the Program Operator in the Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the NFM 2014-2021 signed between Norway and Bulgaria on 9 December 2016.
Program “Justice” includes the implementation of 9 predefined projects to modernize the correctional system and pre-trial detention, to achieve efficiency and effectiveness in the functioning of the judicial system, and to strengthen the rule of law.
The contracts signed today are as follows:
- Project “Ensuring Secure and Safe Material Environment in Prisons and Arrests”;
- Project “Increasing Staff Capacity, Building a Pilot Prison Associated with a Training Centre and Improving the Rehabilitation of Prisoners”;
- Project “Strengthening the Implementation of Alternative Detention Measures”.
They will be implemented in partnership with institutions of the Norwegian Correctional Service – Regional Correctional and Probation Offices and the Norwegian Correctional Service Academy for the Training of Supervisory and Administrative Staff.
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Justice Danail Kirilov and representatives of the National Coordination Unit. The contracts were signed by Prof. Nikolay Prodanov, Deputy Minister of Justice and Chairperson of the Program Operator, and by the Commissioner General Ivaylo Yordanov, Director General of the DGEP.
