The project „Foundation for the future” supports activities for child development, non-formal education, active participation and cultural orientation for asylum seeking children in Bulgaria.

Language literacy sessions are a priority. Improving language skills aims to support the children in acquiring the knowledge needed to adapt and reduce the risk of social exclusion.

An open lesson was held in the Borisova Garden Park with the unaccompanied minors from the accommodation centre Sofia -Voenna Rampa. They coloured the letters of their names on a worksheet, wrote the letters of the alphabet, and finally different words. The boys joined the activity with interest, and the first and fastest received as a reward a second pass on the difficult trail of the adventure park Kokolandia.

On the occasion of the Easter holidays, the refugee children from the Centre in Harmanli visited a home for elderly people. The children greeted the residents and staff with spring songs, and gifted them with painted eggs and Easter decorations, handmade with diligence and love.

Colourful workshops were held with the children from the reception centres of the State Agency for Refugees. Students from Sofia University helped them in their creative activities. All children had the opportunity to get involved in making colourful souvenirs. They tried different ways of colouring eggs. The students told the children about spring holidays and customs in Bulgaria, and the social workers involved in the project helped with the translation in rare languages. They complemented the stories with parallels from the culture of their countries of origin, close to the children. The study of ethnology helps to understand the difference and its acceptance, to overcome the stereotypes and prejudices characteristic of society and create a spirit of tolerance and understanding, said Dr. Kremena Yordanova from the Department of Ethnology at Sofia University, who participates in the workshops in the Refugeе centre Ovcha Kupel, Sofia.

The project „Foundation for the future” is implemented by Caritas Sofia Association in partnership with the Council of Refugee Women in Bulgaria. https://caritas-sofia.org/en/foundations-for-the-future-about-the-project
