"Partnerships and the exchange of experience with Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein are especially valuable to us on the path of innovation and the implementation of successful solutions to common European problems. In this regard, we can announce that negotiations for the new funding period are at an advanced stage, and we are working to ensure that the new memoranda will soon become a reality," stated Mr. Ivan Ivanov, Head of the Central Coordination Unit at the Council of Ministers, during the closing event of the third programming period for Bulgaria under the EEA and Norway Grants.
At the Summer Stage and surrounding alleys in Borisova Garden, technological innovations were showcased, along with excerpts from artistic performances, newly acquired modern technologies, and first-person stories from individuals who worked on the projects. On behalf of the donor countries, the event was opened by Ms. Kerstin Wallberg, Counselor at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway.
"Dedication, cooperation, and trust among all involved in the implementation of projects and programs have led to the results we see here today. Over the years, I have visited many projects and seen firsthand how they bring change, transform lives, support innovation, and introduce smart energy solutions," she said.
An electric mobile library from Vidin, a drone that collects waste from bodies of water in Pomorie, dolls dressed in traditional regional Bulgarian costumes made by children and brought from Kardzhali, educational games for children from Muzeiko, roof tiles with live vegetation from Lovech, and a specially designed rest chair were just some of the project results on display.
"We faced many challenges and had difficult moments, but even then, the strength of our bilateral cooperation stood out—uniting institutions, professionals, artists, and civil society organizations. This is at the heart of the EEA and Norway Grants," Ms. Wallberg emphasized.
In parallel with the event, the traditional annual meeting was held to present the progress and results of the financial mechanisms, as well as negotiations for the signing of the next memoranda of understanding. The funding allocated to Bulgaria under the new period is €260 million—€50 million more than the current period. It will support areas such as the environment, energy, innovation, culture, education, local development, justice, and home affairs. A special fund of €23.5 million has been established to strengthen civil society. Both parties hope the memoranda will be signed in the fall.
Thank you to everyone who became part of our beautiful, colorful and scientific event.
